In a late-night incident that disturbed the peace of Somatane, Pune, the Shirgaon police have arrested nine individuals for allegedly creating a major disturbance, assaulting two men, and vandalizing a rented villa. The arrests were made under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint by the villa owner.
Sequence of Events: From Booking to Violence
The trouble began on Monday when a 24-year-old resident of Dighi rented a villa located at Somatane Phata from a 43-year-old businessman based in Hinjewadi. According to the police, the accused had initially informed the owner that only four people would be staying at the property.
However, the situation escalated quickly when a group of 12 men gathered at the villa. Late into the night, after consuming alcohol, the group began creating an uproar. Their behavior, which included loud arguments and physical altercations among themselves, alarmed other residents in the area.
Confrontation Leads to Assault and Vandalism
Disturbed by the noise, local residents alerted both the villa's caretaker and the owner. When the duo arrived at the scene to reason with the group, the situation turned violent.
The accused allegedly abused and then physically attacked the owner and caretaker with sticks. Not stopping at the assault, the group also proceeded to ransack the rented villa, causing significant damage to the property. Following the traumatic event, the victim formally lodged a complaint with the Shirgaon police on Tuesday.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Acting swiftly on the complaint, a team from the Shirgaon police station led by Police Sub-Inspector P H Parkhe identified and arrested nine of the accused involved in the incident. All those apprehended are friends and hail from the Dighi area. Their profiles include a mix of students and employees working in private companies.
The accused have been booked under multiple sections of the BNS, including sections 115, 118 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), and 189, 190, 191 (rioting), among other relevant charges. A search is currently underway for three more accused who were part of the group but remain at large.
This case highlights the challenges faced by property owners in the rental market and the prompt application of the new criminal code by Pune police to address acts of public disturbance and violence.
