Land Dispute Turns Acidic: Mother-Son Duo Attacked in Kendrapada Village

A shocking incident unfolded in Bachara village of Kendrapada district on Monday evening. A mother and her son sustained severe burn injuries when a neighbor allegedly poured acid on them. The attack stemmed from a long-standing land dispute between the families.

Victims Identified and Hospitalized

The victims are thirty-three-year-old Rabindra Sahoo and his sixty-five-year-old mother Tukini Sahoo. They received burns on their heads, chests, and faces during the horrific assault. Medical personnel first treated them at the district hospital in Kendrapada. Due to the severity of their injuries, doctors later transferred both patients to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for specialized care.

The Dispute That Led to Violence

According to a First Information Report filed on Tuesday, the conflict began over a piece of land. Rabindra Sahoo recently received government funds to construct a house. Last week, he gathered building materials and placed them on his property. His neighbor, thirty-five-year-old Bijay Sahoo, objected strongly to this development.

Bijay Sahoo regularly parked his car on that same land. He verbally abused Rabindra Sahoo and issued death threats. The neighbor demanded an immediate halt to all construction activities. The situation remained tense throughout the week before escalating dramatically on Monday.

The Acid Attack and Arrest

On Monday evening, Rabindra and his mother Tukini were sitting inside their house. Bijay Sahoo arrived unexpectedly and threw acid on both of them. The corrosive substance caused immediate and painful injuries.

Rabindra's wife Satyasini reported the crime to authorities. Pattamundai police station officials acted swiftly on her complaint. "We have arrested the accused based on the complaint," confirmed Bandana Patra, the Inspector-in-Charge of Pattamundai police station. The investigation continues as police gather additional evidence about the incident.

Broader Implications

This violent attack highlights how property disputes can turn deadly in rural communities. Acid attacks cause permanent physical and psychological damage to survivors. The incident serves as a grim reminder about the need for peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms at the local level.

Community leaders in Bachara village expressed shock over the brutality of the assault. Many residents described both families as previously peaceful neighbors before the land disagreement intensified. Local authorities now face pressure to ensure justice for the victims while preventing similar incidents in the future.
