Activist and folk singer Neha Singh Rathore made a strong statement on Saturday night, asserting that questioning or criticising the Prime Minister should not automatically lead to the filing of criminal cases. Her remarks came after she appeared at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow in connection with First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against her.
"Criticism Should Not Mean FIRs": Rathore's Firm Stand
Speaking to reporters outside the police station, Rathore clearly outlined her position. She argued that criticising the Prime Minister should not result in FIRs, being branded as anti-national, or facing abuse. She reminded everyone that the Prime Minister himself has stated that criticism is welcome in a democracy. Rathore was responding to queries about the specific allegations levelled against her in the police complaints.
Compliance with Police Notices and Investigation Details
Rathore clarified that her visit to the Hazratganj police station was solely in compliance with official notices pasted at her residence by the police. She emphasized she was not there for a casual interaction. "Notices were pasted by police from different police stations asking me to appear before the investigating officer. That is why I came," she stated.
When asked if her statement was recorded, the activist provided a clarification from the police. She was informed that since sunset had already occurred, a woman's statement is typically not recorded at night as per procedure. She indicated she might be called again during daytime hours for this purpose.
On Potential Arrest and Legal Strategy
Addressing speculation about a possible arrest, Rathore said she had not specifically raised the issue with the police during her appearance. She expressed a belief that the police are conducting their investigation as they deem appropriate and suggested that questions about arrests should be directed to them.
The activist confirmed she has received two police notices so far and has been asked to cooperate with the ongoing probe. "I have been asked to cooperate in the investigation, and I am ready," she affirmed. However, regarding the identity of the complainant who filed the case, Rathore stated she was unaware of who the person is, noting that people engage in various actions on social media.
On the question of whether she would seek special legal protection due to concerns over the investigation's nature, Rathore adopted a cautious approach. She said she would comment only after consulting her lawyer, adding that she would be able to give a concrete response following proper legal consultation.
