Bengaluru Airport Liquor Shop Faces Legal Action for Operating Beyond Legal Hours

In a significant breach of regulations, a liquor outlet located within the premises of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru was recently discovered operating beyond the permitted hours, violating excise norms. The incident has raised serious concerns about law and order in a high-security zone.

Night Patrol Uncovers Violation

According to a formal complaint filed by Head Constable Basappa Billur, the violation came to light during a routine night patrol on April 7. Constable Billur was assigned to gather information on activities at the airport when, around 11:45 PM, he found the MRP liquor outlet, 'Living Liquidz', in Terminal 2 open and actively conducting business.

"Informing the staff that operating at that time was a clear violation, he instructed them to down shutters immediately," the complaint states. However, the outlet staff allegedly ignored these instructions and continued their operations, directly breaching the conditions of their excise licence.

Police Express Grave Concerns

Police authorities have emphasized that the unauthorised sale of liquor during such late hours, especially in a high-footfall area like an airport, poses a potential threat to public safety and could disturb law and order. The shop was reportedly selling liquor not only to the general public but also to passengers, exacerbating the risk.

A senior police officer clarified the regulations: "The domestic liquor outlet is permitted to stay open only until 10 PM. In contrast, duty-free stores are allowed to function 24x7." The officer further accused the outlet of frequently operating beyond the permissible hours, suggesting a pattern of non-compliance.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

In response to the incident, a case has been officially registered under the Karnataka Excise Act. The investigation is currently in progress, with authorities examining the extent of the violations and any potential lapses in oversight. This action underscores the commitment to enforcing excise laws strictly, particularly in sensitive locations like airports.

The case highlights the importance of adherence to licensing conditions and the need for vigilant monitoring to prevent such infractions in the future.
