Amritsar: The Amritsar police have suspended a traffic policeman following allegations of harassment made by devotees visiting the Golden Temple, which went viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred during a vehicle inspection at a checkpoint at Ram Talai chowk.
A family from Thoba village, who had come to offer prayers and celebrate the purchase of a new vehicle, was returning home when two traffic police personnel stopped them for a document check. The family stated that they fully cooperated and presented all required documents.
They alleged that the policemen accused them of multiple traffic violations, each carrying hefty fines, and also claimed that Rs 500 was taken from them during the checking. After a video highlighting the allegations surfaced on social media, ADCP (Traffic-Amritsar) Amandeep Kaur confirmed that one of the personnel involved has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated. She assured that strict action would be taken if the allegations are found to be true.
