Massive Ganja Haul in Assam: Police Seize 4.5 Quintals Worth Rs 2 Crore

In a significant anti-narcotics operation, police in Assam's Sribhumi district seized approximately 4.5 quintals of ganja with an estimated market value of nearly Rs 2 crore from a vehicle in the Patharkandi area on Thursday night. The seizure underscores ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.

Strategic Operation Based on Intelligence

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, law enforcement authorities established multiple checkpoints at strategic locations along the Patharkandi-Moina bypass. This proactive measure aimed to intercept illicit activities and prevent the transportation of contraband.

During the operation, a vehicle suspected of transporting the ganja from Tripura was intercepted. However, the driver managed to flee the scene, evading immediate capture. Police are intensifying efforts to locate and apprehend the individual.

Recovery and Investigation Details

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed 38 packets of dry cannabis concealed inside the cabin, with a total weight of around 4.5 quintals. The meticulous concealment suggests a well-organized smuggling attempt.

On Friday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sribhumi) Anirban Sharma, along with Patharkandi Police Station officer-in-charge Manash Jyoti Bora and other officials, visited the spot to supervise further investigation. Sharma confirmed the estimated market value of the consignment and emphasized the seriousness of the case.

"The estimated market value of the consignment is around Rs 2 crore," Sharma stated. "A manhunt has been launched to nab the absconding driver, and we are committed to unraveling the full extent of this smuggling network."

Suspected Interstate Smuggling Network

Officials suspect that the consignment was being transported to an undisclosed destination as part of an interstate smuggling network. This incident highlights the challenges faced by authorities in curbing cross-border drug trafficking and the need for coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies.

The seizure not only represents a financial blow to the smugglers but also serves as a deterrent to similar activities in the region. Police are continuing their investigation to identify other individuals involved and to disrupt the broader network responsible for the smuggling operation.
