Azamgarh Police Nab Suspect in Elaborate Ritual Fraud Case

In a significant crackdown on fraudulent activities, the Saraimir police in Azamgarh district made an arrest on Thursday near the Khandwari canal bridge. The operation targeted an individual accused of orchestrating a deceptive scheme that swindled a victim out of Rs 2 lakh under the false pretense of performing rituals.

Details of the Arrest and Investigation

Azamgarh ASP (rural) Chirag Jain confirmed that during the police raid, Dharmendra Kumar was apprehended, while his alleged accomplice, Ramashish Maurya, managed to evade capture and escape from the scene. Law enforcement officials successfully recovered Rs 1.90 lakh in cash from Dharmendra Kumar, who subsequently admitted his involvement in the fraudulent activities targeting the victim, Nandlal Nishad.

Victim's Account and Modus Operandi

Nandlal Nishad had filed a formal FIR with the Saraimir police, detailing how Dharmendra Kumar, along with Ramashish Maurya, contacted him with an enticing offer. They claimed that by performing specific rituals, they could secure an astonishing 20 kilograms of silver and 2 kilograms of gold for Nishad. Trusting their promises, Nishad handed over Rs 2 lakh to Dharmendra Kumar in exchange for two bags, which the fraudster assured contained the promised valuables.

However, upon opening the bags, Nishad was shocked to discover that they contained nothing but worthless brass pieces instead of the precious metals he had been led to expect. This revelation prompted him to immediately report the incident to the authorities, leading to the police investigation and subsequent arrest.

Police Response and Ongoing Efforts

The Saraimir police have emphasized their commitment to tackling such scams and ensuring justice for victims. ASP Chirag Jain highlighted that the recovery of Rs 1.90 lakh cash is a crucial step in the investigation, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the escaped accomplice, Ramashish Maurya. The case underscores the importance of public vigilance against fraudulent schemes that exploit trust and superstition for financial gain.

Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and verify the credentials of individuals making extravagant promises, especially those involving rituals or supernatural claims. The arrest serves as a warning to potential fraudsters and a reassurance to the community of the police's dedication to maintaining law and order in the region.
