Baghpat: Woman shot dead, man dies by suicide in love case

A tragic incident stemming from alleged one-sided love has resulted in the deaths of two young individuals in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district. Police confirmed that a 20-year-old woman was shot dead by a 22-year-old man, who subsequently died by suicide on Thursday.

Sequence of Events in Mahavatpur Bawli Village

The incident unfolded in Mahavatpur Bawli village under the Badaut police station area. According to authorities, the accused, identified as Satnam, a resident of the same village, had reportedly harboured feelings for the victim, Guddan, daughter of Lakhmi Saini, for a long time. Guddan worked as a tailor from her home.

Police stated that Satnam had been pressuring Guddan to marry him, but his advances were not reciprocated. The situation reached a fatal climax around 10:30 am on Thursday. Guddan had stepped out of her house to purchase some items when Satnam, who was waiting in a nearby back lane, intercepted her.

Fatal Confrontation and Aftermath

An argument ensued between the two. During the altercation, Satnam allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and shot Guddan in the head. She collapsed on the spot with critical injuries. Following the shooting, Satnam returned to his house and later died by suicide by hanging himself from a tree nearby.

Upon receiving information, police teams rushed to the scene. The injured woman was shifted to a community health centre, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival. A forensic team was deployed and recovered the weapon used in the crime from the spot.

Police Investigation and Statements

Superintendent of police Suraj Kumar Rai said preliminary investigations point to unrequited love as the motive behind the extreme steps taken by the accused. "Preliminary investigations indicate the incident stemmed from unreciprocated feelings," Rai stated, adding that police are examining all angles to ascertain the complete sequence of events.

Both bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact causes of death. A thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway. Police are looking into all aspects, including the history of the accused's behaviour and how he procured the illegal firearm.

The double tragedy has sent shockwaves through the quiet village, highlighting the devastating consequences of unresolved personal conflicts and the pressing issue of illegal weapons.
