Bengaluru Minor Apprehended for Alleged Theft of Grandfather's Gold Ornaments
In a distressing family incident, the Banaswadi police in Bengaluru have apprehended a minor for allegedly stealing approximately 200 grams of gold ornaments from his grandfather's residence last year. The police have managed to recover only 35 grams of the stolen gold, valued at around Rs 5 lakh, highlighting the challenges in retrieving the full amount.
Details of the Complaint and Theft
An 82-year-old resident of Banaswadi, living with his wife, filed a formal complaint on December 12, reporting that about 199 grams of gold had been stolen from a cupboard in his home on August 13, 2025. The elderly couple suspected their grandson and a friend, who had visited the house on the day of the incident. According to the complaint, the couple had stepped out briefly to see a doctor at 5:30 PM and returned at 6:00 PM, only to find both boys gone and the gold ornaments missing.
The stolen items included precious jewelry accumulated over 32 years, such as a mangalya chain, bangles, three gold chains, a pair of earrings, and rings. The delay in filing the complaint was attributed to the complainant's health issues, which complicated the initial reporting process.
Investigation and Apprehension
During the investigation, police gathered credible evidence linking the grandson to the theft. It was revealed that the juvenile, who resides with his maternal grandmother in Chikkamagaluru district, was already a juvenile in conflict with the law. He had been involved in a previous case under the Lingadahalli police limits and was under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Justice Board in Chikkamagaluru.
Police obtained a body warrant and produced the boy before the Juvenile Justice Board in Bengaluru on April 2, taking him into custody for three days. This legal step was crucial in advancing the case and ensuring the minor's accountability.
Confession and Recovery Efforts
During questioning, the juvenile confessed to selling the stolen gold at a jewellery shop in Mysuru. Unfortunately, police efforts led to the recovery of only 35 grams of the ornaments. The school dropout reportedly spent the proceeds from the sale on partying and personal expenses, indicating a lack of financial responsibility.
After the interrogation, the minor was handed over to the Juvenile Justice Board in Chikkamagaluru for further proceedings. A senior police officer noted that the complainant is now willing to settle the matter, given that the offence was committed by his own grandson, reflecting the emotional complexity of family-related crimes.
Broader Implications
This case underscores the growing concerns about juvenile delinquency and family disputes in urban areas like Bengaluru. It highlights the need for better monitoring and support systems for at-risk youth, as well as the challenges law enforcement faces in recovering stolen valuables. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal belongings and addressing underlying issues that lead to such crimes within families.
