Bengaluru Minor Apprehended for Alleged Gold Theft from Grandfather's Residence
In a distressing family incident, the Banaswadi police in Bengaluru have taken a minor into custody for allegedly stealing approximately 200 grams of gold ornaments from his grandfather's house. The theft, which occurred last year, has seen only partial recovery, with authorities managing to retrieve just 35 grams of the precious metal, valued at around Rs 5 lakh.
Details of the Complaint and Theft
The case came to light when an 82-year-old resident of Banaswadi, living with his wife, filed a formal complaint on December 12. He reported that about 199 grams of gold, stored in a cupboard, had been stolen on August 13, 2025. The elderly couple suspected their grandson and a friend, who had visited their home on the day of the incident.
The theft unfolded when the couple stepped out briefly to visit a doctor at 5:30 PM, returning by 6:00 PM to find both boys missing. Upon checking, they discovered that a collection of gold ornaments, accumulated over 32 years, was gone. The stolen items included a mangalya chain, bangles, three gold chains, a pair of earrings, and rings.
Investigation and Juvenile's Background
Police investigation revealed that the juvenile, who resides with his maternal grandmother in Chikkamagaluru district, had visited the complainant's house with his friend. The complaint had been delayed due to the complainant's health issues, but once filed, authorities gathered credible evidence linking the grandson to the theft.
Officials noted that the boy was already a juvenile in conflict with the law, having been involved in a previous case under Lingadahalli police limits. He was under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Justice Board in Chikkamagaluru. Police obtained a body warrant and produced him before the Board in Bengaluru on April 2, taking him into custody for three days.
Confession and Recovery Efforts
During questioning, the juvenile confessed to selling the stolen gold at a jewellery shop in Mysuru. However, police efforts led to the recovery of only 35 grams of the ornaments. The school dropout reportedly spent the proceeds on partying and personal expenses, highlighting a pattern of irresponsible behavior.
After the investigation, he was handed over to the Board in Chikkamagaluru. A senior officer mentioned that the complainant is now willing to settle the matter, given that the offence was committed by his own grandson, indicating a potential family reconciliation despite the serious nature of the crime.
Broader Implications
This case underscores the challenges in dealing with juvenile offenders and the emotional complexities when crimes occur within families. It also raises questions about the security of valuables in households and the effectiveness of recovery processes in such thefts.
- The theft involved gold ornaments purchased over three decades.
- Only a fraction of the stolen gold was recovered, with significant value lost.
- The juvenile had a prior record, suggesting ongoing behavioral issues.
- The family's willingness to settle highlights the personal toll of such incidents.
As the legal proceedings continue, this incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and proper guidance for young individuals to prevent such occurrences in the future.
