Bengaluru Minor Apprehended for Alleged Theft of Grandfather's Gold Ornaments
In a distressing family incident, the Banaswadi police in Bengaluru have apprehended a minor for allegedly stealing approximately 200 grams of gold ornaments from his grandfather's residence last year. Authorities have managed to recover only 35 grams of the stolen gold, which is valued at around Rs 5 lakh, highlighting the challenges in retrieving the full loot.
Details of the Theft and Complaint
The case came to light when an 82-year-old resident of Banaswadi, who lives with his wife, filed a formal complaint on December 12. He reported that about 199 grams of gold, stored in a cupboard, had been stolen on August 13, 2025. The elderly couple suspected their grandson and a friend, who had visited their home on the day of the incident.
According to the complaint, the juvenile, who resides with his maternal grandmother in Chikkamagaluru district, had come to the house with his friend. The couple had stepped out briefly at 5:30 PM to visit a doctor and returned at 6 PM, only to find both boys missing. Upon checking, they discovered that a collection of gold ornaments—accumulated over 32 years—was gone. This included a mangalya chain, bangles, three gold chains, a pair of earrings, and rings.
The delay in filing the complaint was attributed to the complainant's health issues, which postponed the legal action until December.
Police Investigation and Recovery Efforts
During the investigation, police gathered credible evidence that linked the grandson directly to the theft. Officials noted that the juvenile was already known to the law, having been involved in a previous case under the Lingadahalli police limits. He was under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Justice Board in Chikkamagaluru at the time.
To proceed with the case, police obtained a body warrant and produced the boy before the Juvenile Justice Board in Bengaluru on April 2. He was taken into custody for three days for intensive questioning.
During interrogation, the juvenile confessed to selling the stolen gold at a jewellery shop in Mysuru. Unfortunately, police efforts led to the recovery of only 35 grams of the ornaments. The rest had been disposed of, with the proceeds reportedly spent by the school dropout on partying and personal expenses.
Legal Proceedings and Family Dynamics
After the custody period, the juvenile was handed over to the Juvenile Justice Board in Chikkamagaluru for further legal proceedings. A senior police officer involved in the case revealed that the complainant, given the familial ties, is now willing to settle the matter. This willingness stems from the fact that the offence was committed by his own grandson, adding a layer of emotional complexity to the legal situation.
The case underscores ongoing issues with juvenile delinquency and family conflicts in urban areas like Bengaluru. It also highlights the difficulties law enforcement faces in recovering stolen valuables, especially when they are quickly liquidated.
