Bhubaneswar Police Crack Down on Serial Snatcher Exploiting Pedestrian Trust
In a significant breakthrough, the Nayapalli police in Bhubaneswar have apprehended a habitual snatcher who had been systematically preying on unsuspecting pedestrians by offering them deceptive lifts on his motorcycle. The arrest, made on Sunday, follows a series of complaints from at least six victims, including three women, who fell prey to this cunning scam.
Accused Identified as Sarat Maharana from Nayagarh District
The accused has been identified as Sarat Maharana, aged 46, a native of Nayagarh district who currently resides in Madhusudan Nagar, Unit-4, Bhubaneswar. Police investigations reveal that Maharana adopted a calculated tactic of approaching pedestrians, particularly those waiting for public transport, and offering them rides under false pretenses.
Complaint from 54-Year-Old Woman Leads to Breakthrough
The case gained momentum after a 54-year-old woman filed a complaint on February 6. She reported that while waiting for a bus near the Khandagiri bypass, Maharana offered her a lift. After dropping her near the Nayapalli underpass, he allegedly snatched her bag, which contained a 10-gram gold chain, Rs 1,500 in cash, a cellphone, debit cards, and several important documents.
Acting swiftly on this complaint, police officers examined CCTV footage from the area, which ultimately led to Maharana's arrest. During the operation, authorities recovered substantial evidence, including two gold chains, bangles, Rs 74,495 in cash, and the motorcycle used in the crimes.
Pattern of Deception and Multiple Robberies Uncovered
Further investigation uncovered Maharana's involvement in multiple similar incidents, highlighting a disturbing pattern of exploitation. A senior police officer stated, "He adopted this deceptive tactic and systematically targeted pedestrians, exploiting their trust." The police have linked him to several robberies over recent months:
- On January 30, he allegedly snatched a bag containing Rs 60,000.
- On March 4, he robbed a man of Rs 15,000.
- On March 10, he stole gold ornaments, a wristwatch, and Rs 4,000 from a woman.
- On March 30, he offered a lift to a woman and her daughter, then fled with their jewellery.
- On April 2, he robbed another woman of Rs 7,000.
This arrest underscores the vigilance of Bhubaneswar police in combating street crimes and serves as a warning to the public to remain cautious of such deceptive offers. Authorities are continuing their probe to determine if Maharana is connected to other unsolved cases in the region.
