In a significant crackdown on corruption within the police force, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) of Bihar arrested a police sub-inspector on Friday for allegedly accepting a bribe. The official was caught red-handed at the gate of his own police station.
Sub-Inspector Caught in Sting Operation
Sub-Inspector Pramod Kumar, posted at the Akbarpur police station in Nawada district, was apprehended by a VIB team while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000. According to the official statement from the vigilance bureau, the arrest took place right at the entrance of the Akbarpur police station.
The VIB action followed a formal complaint lodged at its Patna headquarters. The complainant, Vikash Kumar, a resident of Nawada, accused the SI of demanding money. The bribe was allegedly sought in exchange for two illegal favours:
- Not arresting the complainant's brother-in-law and nephew in a specific case.
- Providing favourable treatment and entries in the official case diary related to the matter.
Complaint Verification and Swift Action
After receiving the complaint, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau initiated a verification process. The team found substance in the allegations regarding the bribe demand. Following this confirmation, a special team was constituted to lay a trap.
The team was led by Vigilance DSP Goutam Krishna. They successfully executed the operation, catching SI Pramod Kumar in the act of accepting the illicit cash. The case pertains to an older matter registered in Nawada in the year 2025.
Legal Proceedings and Significance of the Case
The arrested sub-inspector is currently under interrogation by the vigilance officials. The VIB stated that after the questioning process is complete, the accused will be produced before the special vigilance court in Patna. Further investigation into the matter is actively underway.
This case marks an important milestone for the bureau in the current year. The VIB noted that this is the second FIR registered by them against corruption in 2026. More notably, it is the first trap case of the year where officials were caught in the act of taking a bribe.
The arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by Bihar's anti-corruption watchdog to root out malpractice from the state's administration, particularly within the police department. It sends a strong message against the solicitation of bribes for manipulating legal procedures.
