Acquittal After 17-Year Legal Battle
BJP MLA Ranajagjitsinha Patil on Saturday welcomed the acquittal of former Maharashtra home minister Padamsinha Patil and other accused in the Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case, terming the verdict a 'victory of truth' following a prolonged 17-year legal struggle. The case, which dates back to 2006, involved the murder of Nimbalkar, a relative of Patil.
Demand for Investigation into Real Killers
Patil also demanded an impartial investigation to identify the actual perpetrators, expressing concerns over the lengthy trial process. 'Justice has finally been delivered after 17 years, but who will compensate for the suffering and losses our family faced during this period?' he asked, highlighting the emotional and financial toll on his family.
He maintained that his father, Padamsinha Patil, had no involvement in the case and was falsely implicated as part of a political conspiracy. According to Patil, the veteran politician was targeted due to his growing influence, with opposition dating back to the 1990s and intensifying after his election to Parliament in 2009 amid discussions of a possible Union cabinet berth.
Bittersweet Verdict
Describing the verdict as bittersweet, Patil said, 'Though the judgment has come, we cannot properly tell Dr. Padamsinh Patil about it, and even if we do, he is not in a condition to fully understand it.' This statement underscores the personal tragedy behind the legal victory, as Padamsinha Patil has reportedly been unwell.
Political Conspiracy Allegations
Patil suggested the case went beyond a criminal investigation and was linked to wider political developments in Maharashtra. Without naming individuals, he hinted at the involvement of certain political figures and said he would reveal the 'complete truth with evidence' after studying the detailed court order. He urged the public to wait for the full details to emerge.
The acquittal marks the end of a high-profile case that had drawn significant attention in Maharashtra politics. Padamsinha Patil, a former minister and influential leader from the Congress party, was accused of orchestrating the murder of his nephew Pawanraje Nimbalkar in 2006 over a property dispute. The trial lasted 17 years, with multiple witnesses and complex evidence.
Patil's remarks have reignited debates about political vendettas and the need for judicial reforms to expedite such cases. The detailed court judgment is expected to provide clarity on the evidence that led to the acquittal.
