A tragic road accident occurred on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura early Tuesday morning when a passenger bus rammed into a stationary truck, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and 20 injuries. The bus was traveling from Delhi to Varanasi when the driver lost control and crashed into the truck parked on the expressway near the Mant toll plaza.
Details of the Collision
The accident took place around 5:30 AM in the Naujheel police station area. According to police officials, the bus driver was allegedly sleeping at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off its lane and hit the truck from behind. The impact was so severe that the bus's front portion was completely crushed, trapping several passengers inside. Rescue teams, including local police and fire services, arrived at the scene and extricated the victims using cutting equipment.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mathura, Shailesh Kumar Pandey, confirmed the death toll and said, "The bus was overspeeding, and the driver lost control. We have registered a case and are investigating." He added that the injured were rushed to the district hospital and nearby trauma centers, with five in critical condition.
Response and Compensation
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured. He directed district officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and ordered a probe into the accident. The CM also appealed to the public to follow traffic rules and avoid overspeeding on expressways.
"The state government stands with the bereaved families. Strict action will be taken against those responsible for this negligence," Adityanath said in a statement.
Impact and Safety Concerns
The Yamuna Expressway, a six-lane controlled-access highway, has witnessed several accidents due to overspeeding and driver fatigue. According to data from the Uttar Pradesh Police, over 200 fatal accidents occurred on the expressway in 2025, with many attributed to drowsy driving. This incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of speed limits and mandatory rest stops for long-distance bus drivers.
Local residents and transport unions have demanded the installation of more speed breakers and reflectors at accident-prone zones. "The expressway is like a death trap. There are no proper warning signs for parked trucks," said Rajesh Kumar, a local truck driver. Police have urged commuters to avoid driving during early morning hours when fatigue is common.
The bus, operated by a private contractor, was carrying around 50 passengers. The truck driver fled the scene after the collision but was later apprehended by police. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been filed, and further investigations are underway.
