Cancer Patient Alleges Brutal Custodial Assault and Sodomy in Haryana

A cancer patient has lodged a complaint alleging that he was physically assaulted, sexually abused, and taunted about his medical condition while in custody at a police station in Haryana. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has intensified its probe into the matter, officials said on Wednesday.

The complainant, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, stated that he was taken into custody on a minor charge. Despite informing the police personnel about his serious illness, he was subjected to relentless assault and sodomy. He also claimed that the accused officers mocked his disease, saying he would die anyway.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to the complaint, the incident occurred earlier this week at a police station in the state. The victim was arrested in connection with a dispute and was held for questioning. He alleged that multiple officers were involved in the assault and sexual abuse.

“I told them I had cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy, but they laughed and said I was already a dead man. They beat me and then sexually assaulted me,” the victim said in his statement to the SIT.

Medical examination of the victim has been conducted, and reports are awaited. The SIT has collected CCTV footage from the police station and is recording statements of other inmates and staff.

SIT Intensifies Investigation

The Haryana Police constituted the SIT after the victim’s family approached senior officials and the media. The team, led by a Superintendent of Police-rank officer, is probing the allegations thoroughly.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to assault, criminal intimidation, and unnatural offenses. The investigation is progressing rapidly, and we will ensure justice,” said a senior police official.

The SIT has already suspended two police personnel named in the complaint and is examining the role of others. The victim has been provided security and is being treated at a hospital.

Broader Concerns Over Custodial Violence

The case has sparked outrage among human rights activists and opposition parties, who have demanded a high-level inquiry and strict action against the perpetrators. They have also highlighted the vulnerability of seriously ill detainees in police custody.

According to the National Human Rights Commission, custodial violence remains a persistent issue in India, with hundreds of complaints filed each year. In 2025, the NHRC reported over 1,200 cases of custodial torture, though convictions remain low.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the need for systemic reforms to prevent abuse of power. No one, especially a cancer patient, should face such brutality,” said an activist.

The SIT has appealed to the public not to speculate and has assured a fair investigation. The victim’s family has demanded that all accused be arrested immediately and that the police station be closed pending inquiry.
