Ghaziabad: 1 Dead, Driver Injured as Car Plunges 30 Feet from Flyover Near Sihani Gate
Car crash in Ghaziabad kills one, injures driver

A tragic accident in Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a man after the car he was travelling in plunged approximately 30 feet from a flyover. The vehicle landed within the compound of a Public Works Department (PWD) office near Sihani Gate.

Father Killed, Son Seriously Injured in High-Impact Crash

The ill-fated car was a Swift Dzire, driven by 25-year-old Prince. His father, Rakesh Kumar Singh (50), was seated beside him and succumbed to his injuries. Prince sustained serious injuries in the horrific fall. According to police, the father-son duo were returning from a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred on the lane leading from the old bus stand towards Hapur Mor in Raj Nagar.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Nandgram) Upasana Pandey stated that preliminary investigations indicated the car was being driven at a high speed of around 100 kilometres per hour. "The driver might have dozed off, causing the vehicle to go out of control and crash directly into the bridge railing," ACP Pandey explained. The impact of the collision was so powerful that it shattered the strong iron railing, sending the car hurtling down into the PWD premises below.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation Details

Bystanders at the spot immediately alerted the police. A team rushed to the scene and extricated both occupants from the mangled vehicle. They were swiftly taken to a hospital, where doctors declared Rakesh Kumar Singh dead on arrival. Prince is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

Police noted that the force of the impact was concentrated on the side where Rakesh was sitting, trapping him inside the wreckage. During inspection, authorities found that only one airbag in the car had deployed upon crash. Rakesh Kumar Singh worked as a security guard at a bank in the Raj Nagar District Centre, while his son Prince runs a grocery shop.

A Dangerous Pattern on Ghaziabad's Flyovers

ACP Pandey highlighted that the accident took place at a time of minimal traffic, which averted further casualties. She remarked that the consequences could have been far more devastating during peak hours.

This incident adds to a worrying list of similar accidents on the city's elevated roads:

  • On September 28, four youths were injured after their motorcycle fell from the Thakurdwara flyover.
  • On January 18, 2025, a 38-year-old man died after losing control of his bike on the same flyover.
  • On May 30, 2024, a Maruti Eeco fell from the Delhi Meerut Expressway, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old girl.
  • On September 18, 2022, two friends died in Indirapuram after their bike crashed into the Hindon elevated road.
  • On September 8, 2022, two minors were injured after their bike fell from the Thakurdwara flyover.
  • On October 13, 2021, a private bus carrying LG employees fell about 15 feet from the Bhatia Mor flyover, killing a biker and injuring four others.

Following Monday's crash, debris from the broken railing was cleared from the road, and the damaged car was removed using a crane. The incident underscores persistent concerns about road safety on Ghaziabad's flyovers and the fatal risks of driver fatigue and high-speed travel.
