Chandigarh Police launched a major enforcement drive on New Year's Eve, resulting in a significant number of penalties for traffic violations, with a sharp focus on drunk driving. The extensive security and traffic arrangements across the city helped prevent any major untoward incidents during the celebrations.
Strict Action Against Traffic Violators
On the night of December 31, 2025, the traffic police were out in full force. They issued a total of 75 challans specifically for driving under the influence of liquor. In a related but separate action, they also challaned 31 motorists for various other traffic violations. The police confirmed that two individuals were caught in the act of mixing drinks while driving within the city limits.
As part of the crackdown, the authorities did not hesitate to take stringent measures. Eight vehicles were impounded during the New Year's Eve operations for serious violations.
Elaborate Security Arrangements and Leadership
To manage the festivities and curb hooliganism, Chandigarh Police had deployed an elaborate plan. Over 1,000 police personnel were stationed on the roads throughout the city. The strategy involved setting up a multi-layered checking system with 44 internal nakas and 18 outer barriers to monitor the flow of incoming and outgoing vehicles. Additionally, the traffic police established 16 checkposts at key locations.
Senior leadership was actively involved in the ground operations. DGP Sagar Preet Hooda and UT SSP Kanwardeep Kaur were personally seen inspecting various nakas on New Year's night. They also distributed sweets among the police personnel on duty, boosting morale.
Controlled Celebrations and Public Response
To ensure smooth movement and safety in crowded areas, the inner markets of several sectors were declared restricted zones for vehicles. These included sectors 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17, and 22.
The police control room remained busy through the night, fielding hundreds of calls from the public. These calls included reports of minor accidents and brawls. Despite the high volume of activity, the police confirmed that no major untoward incident was reported from any part of the city on Wednesday night, attributing the peaceful celebrations to the extensive preparations and visible police presence.
