A 30-year-old woman in Chennai has been arrested in connection with the death of her six-year-old son, following an investigation that revealed he died of strangulation. The incident occurred in Vyasarpadi, where the woman, identified as Sivaranjani, lived with her husband Veerachelvan, 35, and their two children: Krishnan, aged six, and nine-month-old Mithran. Police reported that Krishnan was Sivaranjani's son from a previous marriage.
Incident Details
On May 4, around 6 a.m., Sivaranjani informed her husband that she found Krishnan unconscious at home. The couple rushed the child to Government Stanley Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Hospital staff noticed bruises on the child's neck and alerted the police, prompting an inquiry.
During initial questioning, Sivaranjani claimed that Krishnan had fallen from a sofa, which raised suspicion due to the nature of the injuries. A subsequent postmortem examination concluded that the child died of asphyxiation due to strangulation. Police noted that Sivaranjani provided conflicting accounts of the events leading to Krishnan's death during the investigation.
Background and Motive
Authorities disclosed that Krishnan had stopped attending school and exhibited behavioral issues. On the day of the incident, Krishnan allegedly tied a sacred thread tightly around his younger brother Mithran's neck while playing, causing the infant to cry. In an attempt to discipline the older child, Sivaranjani wound a dupatta around Krishnan's neck to demonstrate how it hurt the infant. During this act, Krishnan lost consciousness. The woman placed him on a cot, believing he had fallen asleep. The next morning, when she tried to wake him, he did not respond.
Legal Action
Based on the postmortem findings and evidence gathered, police altered the case from unnatural death to murder. Sivaranjani was arrested and subsequently remanded in judicial custody. The investigation continues to uncover further details surrounding the tragic event.
