CM Vijay caught between promise and progress
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is facing his first major political test as the state grapples with the contentious Parandur airport project. The proposed airport, intended to serve the Chennai region, has pitted the CM's promise to Ekanapuram villagers against the state's economic aspirations.
During his election campaign, Vijay had assured the residents of Ekanapuram that their farmland and houses would not be acquired for the project. However, the Tamil Nadu government is now pushing for the airport to boost infrastructure and attract investment.
Economic stakes high for Tamil Nadu
The new airport at Parandur is seen as critical for Tamil Nadu's competitiveness. The existing Chennai airport is nearing capacity, and business leaders have warned that inadequate air connectivity could deter investors. According to state officials, the project could generate thousands of jobs and significantly enhance logistics.
"The Parandur airport is not just about travel; it is about Tamil Nadu's future as a hub for industry and trade," said a senior bureaucrat, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Villagers stand firm
Ekanapuram residents, however, remain resolute. They argue that the CM's promise was a key reason for their electoral support. "We voted for Vijay because he said our land would be safe. If he goes back on his word, it will be a betrayal," said R. Muthu, a local farmer.
The village, home to around 2,000 families, relies heavily on agriculture. Farmers fear that losing their land would destroy their livelihoods.
Government explores alternatives
In a bid to resolve the impasse, the state government is considering alternative sites or a revised alignment that would minimize displacement. However, officials admit that any change could delay the project and increase costs.
"We are looking at all options, but the need for a new airport is urgent. We cannot afford to lose momentum," the bureaucrat added.
The standoff has also drawn criticism from opposition parties, who accuse Vijay of misleading voters. The DMK and AIADMK have demanded that the CM clarify his stance.
What lies ahead
With the project at a critical juncture, Vijay's decision will have far-reaching implications. If he prioritizes the villagers' interests, he risks alienating investors and stalling economic growth. If he proceeds with acquisition, he may lose the trust of rural voters.
Political analysts say this is a defining moment for the fledgling CM. "Vijay's handling of the Parandur issue will set the tone for his administration. It will show whether he can balance development with social justice," said political commentator S. Ramachandran.
The state government has set a deadline of August 2026 to finalize the airport plan. Until then, all eyes are on Vijay as he navigates this high-stakes battle.
