In a significant development, alert residents of Surya Nagar in Ghaziabad played a crucial role in helping the police arrest a Delhi Police constable allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident. The incident, which occurred on December 14, claimed the life of a 65-year-old man a week later.
Constable Arrested After Public Tip-Off
The case took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when constable Deepak Kumar, posted with the cyber cell of Shahdara police station in Delhi, drove into Surya Nagar. Local residents, who had been vigilant since the hit-and-run, recognized the Kia Seltos he was driving and immediately informed the police. A police team swiftly arrived at the scene, detained Kumar, and took him in for questioning.
During interrogation, the constable admitted that he was driving to Delhi on the morning of December 14 when he struck the victim and fled. However, he did not disclose how he came into possession of the vehicle. "We are investigating that. We will have information on the car soon," said Shweta Kumari Yadav, ACP Sahibabad.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The accident took place around 8:30 am near the victim's house. Jai Prakash Saini (65) was on his morning walk when he was struck from behind by the speeding car. The impact left him grievously injured on the road. As the Kia Seltos sped away, neighbors rushed Saini to MMG Hospital. Due to his deteriorating condition, he was later referred to Yashoda Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, Saini succumbed to his injuries on December 21, a week after the accident. His son, Rajat Sharma, provided the account of the incident to the authorities.
Stolen Vehicle Adds Twist to Investigation
Police investigation revealed a shocking detail: the car constable Deepak Kumar was driving had been reported stolen from Noida in 2022. After tracing the number plate, police contacted the original owner in Noida, who confirmed the theft and stated he had filed a complaint at the Sector 58 police station, but the vehicle was never recovered until now.
Following the victim's death, the police have added more serious charges. "After the accident, an FIR was registered against unknown persons for rash driving and endangering life. Now, with the victim's death, we are adding sections for causing death by negligence to the charge sheet. We have also managed to arrest the car driver," stated ACP Yadav.
The arrest underscores the critical role of community vigilance. The proactive response of Surya Nagar residents directly led to the breakthrough in a case that involved a stolen vehicle and a police personnel, highlighting ongoing issues of road safety and accountability.
