A criminal was killed in a police encounter near Khubru village in the Gannaur area of Sonepat district on Monday morning, according to officials. A head constable also sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire.
Identity of the Deceased and Criminal Record
The deceased has been identified as Gopal alias Gopi, a resident of Atayal village in Sonepat district. Police sources confirmed that around 25 criminal cases, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, firing, and robbery, have been registered against him at various police stations.
Gopal had been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in two separate murder cases. He was released on parole but failed to surrender after the parole period ended, making him a wanted fugitive.
Details of the Encounter
The encounter took place early Monday when a police team was conducting a search operation in the area. Upon spotting the suspect, the police attempted to apprehend him, but he opened fire, leading to a shootout. In the exchange, Gopal was fatally shot, and a head constable was hit by a bullet. The injured officer has been rushed to a hospital for treatment; his condition is reported to be stable.
Legal and Investigative Actions
Senior police officials have reached the spot and are investigating the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and further legal proceedings are underway. The police are also verifying if Gopal was involved in any other recent crimes.
Authorities have emphasized that the encounter was a result of the suspect's resistance and that necessary force was used in self-defense. The injured constable is being provided medical care.
