Dehradun: Two policemen, including a sub-inspector, were attached to the police lines after a video purportedly showing them thrashing a man with canes in Premnagar was widely shared on social media, officials said.

Incident Details

The incident occurred late Friday evening near a private university, where police had gone to clear a traffic jam caused by irregular parking and a large gathering of students on a busy road. The situation escalated when some individuals began arguing with the officers without any apparent reason.

Police Response

SP (city) Pramod Kumar said police had received repeated complaints from residents about congestion in the area. “On reaching the spot, the officers found that the jam was caused by a large student gathering for an event. They asked the students and the university management to remove the vehicles and clear the road,” he said.

Action Taken

Referring to the video, which purportedly shows the officers beating a man on the ground, Kumar said a probe has been ordered. “In the meantime, the SI and the constable have been attached to the police lines. Appropriate action will be taken based on the inquiry findings,” he said.

The video, which went viral on social media, sparked outrage and demands for strict action against the officers involved. Police have urged the public to remain calm and assured that justice will be served.
