A Delhi Police constable opened fire at a group of labourers in the Dwarka area of the national capital late on Sunday night, resulting in the death of one person. The incident took place near a construction site where the labourers were sleeping.
Details of the Incident
The constable, identified as Ramesh Kumar, was reportedly off-duty at the time of the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that an argument broke out between the constable and the labourers over some issue, leading to the firing. The constable used his service revolver to shoot at the labourers, killing one on the spot and injuring another.
Police Response and Arrest
Upon receiving information, senior police officials rushed to the spot. The injured labourer was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The constable was arrested from the scene, and his service revolver has been seized for forensic examination.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) said, "A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act has been registered. The constable is being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the incident."
Background and Reactions
The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Rajesh, a native of Bihar who was working as a labourer in Dwarka. His family has been informed, and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
Local residents and labourers gathered at the spot, demanding strict action against the constable. They alleged that the constable was in an inebriated state and had been harassing the labourers for some time.
Legal Proceedings
The police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The constable has been suspended pending inquiry. Further investigations are underway to determine if there were any prior complaints against the constable.
This incident has raised questions about the conduct of police personnel and their accountability. Human rights activists have condemned the incident and called for a fair trial.
