A 48-year-old traffic assistant sub-inspector (ASI) sustained injuries after a car allegedly jumped a red light and struck him near Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in northeast Delhi. The impact of the collision threw the officer onto the bonnet of the vehicle, where he was dragged for approximately 100 metres before the driver abandoned the car and fled the scene, according to police reports.
Incident Details
The injured officer, identified as Vikas Kumar, was posted at the Shahdara traffic circle and was serving as a zonal officer at the GTB Hospital intersection during his shift from 3 pm to 11 pm. The First Information Report (FIR) states that the incident occurred around 4:50 pm on April 21, while Kumar and head constable Gaurav Tyagi were conducting vehicle checks near Gate No. 7 of the hospital.
According to police, a black car disregarded the red light. Tyagi first signalled the driver to stop, but the vehicle accelerated instead. Kumar then stepped forward and signalled again, causing the car to slow down briefly before the driver suddenly sped up, hitting him. The impact threw Kumar onto the bonnet of the car. In a desperate attempt to save himself, he held onto the windscreen wipers. Despite repeated warnings from the officer, the driver continued driving erratically for nearly 100 metres until the wipers snapped, flinging Kumar onto the road. The driver then fled the scene.
Arrest and Investigation
Kumar suffered injuries and was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. The driver has been arrested in connection with the incident, police confirmed. A case has been registered at the GTB Enclave police station, and further investigation is underway.
