A late-night scare unfolded on Bengaluru's bustling Indiranagar 100 Feet Road when a drunk software engineer lost control of his car, narrowly missing at least six people standing on the footpath before crashing into a popular restaurant wall. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 PM on Thursday, could have resulted in multiple fatalities, police stated.
Chaotic Scene on 100 Feet Road
The 42-year-old techie, identified as Derrik Tony, a resident of Domlur and an employee of a private technology firm, was returning home alone after a party. Driving at high speed from a side lane, he jumped the median, crashed through several flower pots, and finally rammed the wall of the Barbeque Nation restaurant. CCTV footage from the scene captured the terrifying moment the sedan hurtled straight ahead instead of turning left onto the main road, sending bystanders scrambling for safety.
Narrow Escape for Bystanders
Six people, including women, were standing outside the restaurant precisely where the vehicle came charging towards them. In the ensuing chaos, a youth sustained injuries, and two other vehicles were damaged. Traffic police officials emphasized the sheer luck involved. "It was fortunate that no one was run over because traffic was heavy at that time. A few seconds' difference could have resulted in multiple fatalities at the spot," a traffic police officer told reporters.
Legal Repercussions for the Accused Driver
Acting on a complaint from a restaurant staff member, the Jeevan Bima Nagar traffic police swiftly registered a case. Derrik Tony was booked for rash and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol. His vehicle was immediately seized by the authorities. DCP Traffic (East), Sahil Bagla, confirmed that the accused was subjected to medical and alcohol tests. "On finding him to be in an inebriated condition, we registered an FIR against him, arrested and released him on station bail," Bagla stated. Police confirmed that Tony will have to appear before court and pay a fine to secure his vehicle's release.
