A 70-year-old grain trader died during treatment on Friday after consuming poison following alleged harassment by his adopted son and daughter-in-law in Shahjahanpur, police said on Saturday.
A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on charges of abetment to suicide against Shobhit and his wife, Swati. Circle Officer (Tilhar) Jyoti Yadav said, “Shobhit was taken into custody on Friday, and efforts are underway to trace his wife.”
Satish Chandra Gupta and his wife, Rambeti, had adopted Shobhit as a newborn about 25 years ago after remaining childless for several years. Police said Satish consumed poison on Wednesday and went to a police station to lodge a complaint against his son and daughter-in-law. His condition deteriorated thereafter. Officials added that he had approached the police earlier as well but had not filed a written complaint.
Based on a complaint by his wife, who alleged that the couple was responsible for his death, the case was registered. Neighbors told police that Shobhit, who is unemployed, and Swati had frequent quarrels with the elderly couple after their marriage three years ago, reportedly against the family’s wishes.
