The Punjab Excise Department conducted raids on distilleries linked to Congress MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh in Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts on Friday, according to sources. Officials have not yet issued an official statement regarding the searches.
Raids Coincide with Congress Meeting
The enforcement action took place simultaneously with a meeting of senior Congress leaders at Singh's residence in Chandigarh. The gathering was held ahead of discussions with AICC general secretary Bhupesh Baghel and included several disgruntled party leaders.
MLA's Response
Reacting to the searches, Rana Gurjeet Singh stated that his family operates legitimate businesses and that inspections are routine. "We are in business. Raids are bound to happen," he told mediapersons. However, he noted that the timing of the action, just before the Congress meeting, raised questions. He maintained that his businesses have always complied with legal requirements and insisted he has nothing to hide. He stopped short of directly accusing the government of political vendetta but suggested the coincidence was noteworthy.
Background
Rana Gurjeet Singh is a prominent Congress MLA from Punjab. The raids come amid internal party tensions, with several leaders expressing dissatisfaction. The Excise Department's actions have sparked speculation about possible political motivations, though no official comment has been made.
