Police File FIR Against 26 Individuals in Farmer Suicide Case

Authorities in Uttarakhand have registered a First Information Report against twenty-six people. This action follows the tragic suicide of a forty-year-old farmer. The case involves serious allegations of a massive land fraud and subsequent police inaction.

Details of the Alleged Fraud

The victim, Sukhwant Singh, and his brother Parvinder Singh purchased approximately 6.84 acres of land. They paid property dealers Amarjeet Singh, Ashish Chauhan, and Kulvinder Singh. The original landowners, Balwant Singh and Kulwant Singh, directed the brothers to complete the transaction through these dealers.

According to the FIR filed by Parvinder Singh, the brothers paid a total of Rs 3.8 crore. This amount included Rs 1 crore transferred through banks and Rs 2.8 crore paid in cash. Despite this substantial payment, the accused individuals failed to execute the land registry. They also did not return the money to the brothers.

The Tragic Outcome and Immediate Aftermath

Sukhwant Singh died by suicide on January 10th. Before taking this extreme step, he recorded a video. In this video, he accused land mafias of cheating him out of nearly Rs 4 crore. He also alleged corruption and inaction when he approached the police for help.

The video quickly spread across social media platforms. It triggered widespread public outrage and demanded immediate administrative action. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a magisterial inquiry. Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat will conduct this investigation.

Police Response and Suspensions

Udham Singh Nagar SSP Manikant Mishra took swift disciplinary action. He suspended the ITI police station house officer and a sub-inspector. The entire Paiga police outpost personnel were sent to the police lines. A Special Investigation Team has now been formed under SP Niharika Tomar.

Inspector Ravi Kumar Saini of Kunda police station leads the investigation. Officers from Kashipur, the Special Operations Group, and a technical team will assist him. This team will analyze CCTV footage and electronic evidence thoroughly.
