The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will launch a special drive against abandoned vehicles across the city starting July 10. Vehicles that are not removed within the notice period will be towed away and seized by joint enforcement teams comprising officials from city corporations and the traffic police.
Scope of the drive
The initiative aims to clear public spaces, roads, and footpaths of vehicles that have been left unused for extended periods, causing obstruction and safety hazards. According to a GBA official, the drive will cover all eight zones of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and other municipal areas under the GBA.
Notice and enforcement
Owners of abandoned vehicles will be issued a notice allowing them a specific period to remove their vehicles voluntarily. If they fail to comply, joint teams will impound the vehicles. The seized vehicles will be taken to designated impound lots, and owners will have to pay fines and towing charges to retrieve them.
Public cooperation sought
The GBA has urged citizens to report abandoned vehicles in their localities through the authority's helpline or mobile app. “We request the public to cooperate with us by reporting any abandoned vehicles so that we can make Bengaluru clutter-free and safer for everyone,” said a GBA spokesperson.
Previous efforts and challenges
Similar drives in the past have faced challenges such as difficulty in tracing owners and lack of adequate impound space. However, the GBA claims to have streamlined the process with better coordination between agencies and increased impound capacity.
