Gurgaon Traffic: 21,901 Challans, Rs 1.8 Crore Fines in Week

Gurgaon Traffic Police Issue Massive 21,901 Challans in Single Week

Gurgaon witnessed a major traffic enforcement drive between January 5 and January 11, 2026. The city's traffic police recorded a staggering 21,901 violations during this seven-day period. These challans resulted in fines amounting to Rs 1.8 crore, highlighting the scale of the crackdown.

On-Road Violations Dominate with 13,331 Challans

Traffic personnel issued 13,331 challans directly on the roads. Wrong-side driving emerged as the most common offence with 1,907 cases. Other frequent violations included crossing road markings (829 challans), pillion riders without helmets (781), and drivers not wearing seat belts (1,013).

Police also recorded significant numbers for riders without helmets (750), drunken driving (299), and wrong parking (1,148). Additional offences included unsafe U-turns (356), triple riding (200), and speeding (156).

Surveillance Cameras Capture 8,570 More Violations

Automated surveillance systems contributed another 8,570 challans. No-entry violations topped this category with 5,402 instances. Speeding accounted for 1,739 challans while unsafe lane changes resulted in 934 penalties.

Camera systems also detected pillion riders without helmets (101), drivers without seat belts (150), and pollution-related offences (109). Other automated detections included drivers without helmets (65), triple riding (22), and front passengers without seat belts (48).

Special Monitoring on Key Highways

Authorities focused special attention on busy stretches including NH 8, Dwarka Expressway, and Mumbai Expressway. They deployed cameras installed by NHAI and used drones to monitor speeding and frequent lane changes. Police identified these behaviours as major causes of road accidents in the city.

Public Awareness Drives Reach Hundreds

As part of the enforcement effort, traffic police conducted awareness programmes at 21 locations using safety chariots. These sessions reached more than 760 residents and students. Participants received information about traffic rules, the Dial 112 emergency number, and the 1095 helpline.

The programmes emphasized several key safety practices. Organizers stressed the importance of following lane discipline, observing speed limits, wearing helmets properly, and avoiding mobile phone use while driving. They also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Traffic Mitra Program Gains Traction

To improve traffic management, authorities are enrolling volunteers as 'traffic mitra'. The initiative has already received over 180 applications. Of these, 39 volunteers have completed their training at the TEC IRTE centre located at the Traffic Tower.

This comprehensive approach combines strict enforcement with public education and community involvement. Gurgaon's traffic police aim to create safer roads through this multi-pronged strategy.
