Hamirpur Highway Blocked as Viral Video Triggers Public Outrage
Tension gripped the Sumerpur police station area in Hamirpur district after an objectionable video of a young woman spread rapidly online. The incident prompted immediate and forceful reactions from local residents and business owners.
Shops Shut, Highway Jammed in Protest
Angered by the viral video, members of the local traders' association and several other organizations took to the streets. They forced shop shutters down and blocked the National Highway directly in front of the Sumerpur police station. This protest action severely disrupted traffic movement along the crucial route.
Family Files Complaint, Alleges Harassment
The woman's family rushed to the police station to file a formal complaint. They demanded strict and immediate action against the accused. In their statement, the family alleged that a youth had trapped the woman in a love affair. They claimed he recorded a video of her and later uploaded it to social media platforms, causing immense distress.
The brother of the woman provided detailed allegations to the police. He stated that the accused, along with an associate, had continuously harassed the young woman through phone calls. The situation escalated when they made the video and circulated it publicly. The family expressed deep hurt and warned that if prompt action was not taken, they would stage a dharna, or sit-in protest, at the police station itself.
Public Anger Escalates, Property Damaged
As news of the video spread through the town, public anger boiled over. A group of angry youths located the house of the accused individuals. Finding the house locked, they pelted it with stones. A vehicle parked outside the property sustained damage during this outburst.
Police Register Case, Deploy Forces
Following the highway blockade, police authorities moved swiftly to register a case. They filed charges under relevant sections against the accused youth, identified as Afan Khan, and his father, Maulana Khan.
CO Sadar Rajesh Kamal confirmed the registration of the case. Upon receiving information about the highway jam, a police force was dispatched to the spot. Officers managed to control the volatile situation through persuasion and dialogue. As a precautionary measure, police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain order.
