A 56-year-old man, convicted in a cheque bounce case, died of a massive heart attack in Vadodara Central Jail on Tuesday morning, just a day after being sentenced. The incident has raised concerns about the health of inmates and the impact of judicial stress.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The convict, identified as Pritesh Jadhav, a resident of Bhayli Canal Road, was rushed to SSG Hospital after he complained of chest pain. He succumbed during treatment. Jail officials confirmed that Jadhav was sentenced to one-and-a-half years in prison on Monday. The court also ordered him to deposit Rs 1.50 lakh, with a warning that his sentence would be extended if he failed to pay the amount.
Jadhav was brought to the jail on Monday evening. He was provided with a blanket and a cloth mattress in the barracks. On Tuesday morning, while having tea, he experienced severe chest pain and was immediately taken to the hospital.
Health Background and Case History
Family members revealed that Jadhav was a known heart patient and had been unwell for several months. The stress of the recent conviction and impending imprisonment is believed to have severely aggravated his cardiac condition.
The legal trouble began last year when a case under the Negotiable Instruments Act was registered against him. This happened after a cheque he issued was returned by the bank due to insufficient funds. Jadhav had been living on rent in Bhayli with his wife.
Aftermath and Implications
Authorities have pointed out that the mental and emotional strain of the conviction likely played a critical role in the tragic outcome. This incident highlights the vulnerable health status of some individuals entering the judicial and prison system.
The sudden death of an inmate shortly after sentencing brings focus to the protocols for medical screening and care within detention facilities, especially for those with pre-existing conditions.
