Hisar Court Gives 5-Year Jail for Phone Snatching

A district court in Hisar has sentenced two individuals to five years of rigorous imprisonment each in connection with a mobile phone snatching incident that occurred nearly two years ago. The case involved a private security guard as the victim. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of the convicts.

Court Verdict

District and Sessions Judge Alka Malik delivered the verdict, convicting the accused, Yogesh and Tajender, in the robbery case registered at the Civil Lines police station in 2024. The judgment came after a thorough trial, during which the prosecution presented evidence linking the duo to the crime.

Background of the Case

The case was initiated based on a complaint filed by Ramprasad, a resident of Labour Colony at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University. According to the complaint, the accused snatched his mobile phone, leading to the registration of a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Following an investigation by the police, the accused were arrested and subsequently put on trial. The court, after examining witnesses and documentary evidence, found both guilty of the offense. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the crime, noting that snatching incidents create a sense of insecurity among citizens.

Sentencing and Fine

The court sentenced each convict to five years of rigorous imprisonment and also levied a fine of Rs 25,000. In default of payment of the fine, the convicts will have to undergo an additional period of simple imprisonment. The court directed that the fine amount, if recovered, be paid as compensation to the victim.

The verdict is seen as a strong message against street crimes, particularly those targeting vulnerable individuals like security guards. The prosecution argued that such offenses warrant strict punishment to deter potential offenders.
