Hyderabad Police to Set Up 100 Drunk Driving Checkpoints on New Year's Eve
Hyderabad Police: 100 DUI Checkpoints on Dec 31

Hyderabad Police have issued a stern warning to revellers planning to ring in the New Year behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. In a major announcement, Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar revealed plans for an extensive enforcement operation targeting drunk driving across the city on December 31.

Massive Crackdown Across the City

The police will establish checkpoints at a staggering 100 locations throughout Hyderabad to catch those driving under the influence. Commissioner Sajjanar made a direct appeal to the public, urging them to make the New Year memorable for the right reasons, not by breaking the law. He stated that the choice lies with the citizens: to start the year with a celebration or with police action.

This year-end blitz is not an isolated event. The Hyderabad police initiated their special drunk driving checks starting December 24, building up momentum for the main enforcement on New Year's Eve. The Commissioner emphasized that those caught will face severe consequences, with no leniency shown.

Narcotics Wing on High Alert

Alongside the crackdown on drunk driving, the police have also activated measures against drug-related activities. The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has begun intensified monitoring of suspected drug peddlers. This dual-pronged approach aims to curb both drunk driving and drug smuggling, ensuring overall public safety during the celebrations.

A Look at the Year's Road Safety Statistics

The police shared revealing data that underscores the necessity of such strict measures. In the current year, a massive 52,803 drivers were caught for drink-driving and subsequently underwent counselling. The figures also show a worrying trend of underage driving, with 7,808 minors caught operating vehicles. Following these incidents, charges were filed in 5,818 cases against the parents or owners of the vehicles involved.

On a slightly positive note, the total number of road accidents registered this year stands at 2,679. While still high, this marks a decrease compared to the 3,058 accidents recorded in 2024.

Public Cooperation is Key

The Hyderabad Police's message is clear: public safety is paramount. The extensive deployment planned for New Year's Eve is a preventive measure designed to deter irresponsible behaviour and save lives. Authorities are encouraging people to use designated drivers, taxis, or ride-hailing services to ensure everyone sees the start of 2025 safely. The success of this initiative heavily relies on public awareness and cooperation to make the festivities safe and enjoyable for all.
