Senior Karnataka IPS Officer Suspended Over Viral Video Controversy
The Karnataka government has taken decisive action against senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao. Authorities suspended him late Monday following the circulation of a viral video. This video allegedly shows the officer engaging in inappropriate conduct inside his office.
Government Cites "Unbecoming" Behavior in Suspension Order
In the official suspension order, Under Secretary K V Ashoka outlined the government's position. The order states that videos and news reports broadcast on public channels show Dr. K Ramachandra Rao acting in an obscene manner. This behavior is described as unbecoming of a government servant and causing embarrassment to the government.
The state government examined the matter thoroughly. Officials concluded that the officer's conduct violates Rule 3 of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules from 1968. The government expressed prima facie satisfaction that immediate suspension was necessary pending a full inquiry.
Officer Denies Allegations, Calls Video Fabricated
Ramachandra Rao responded strongly to the allegations on Monday. He claimed that false information was being circulated about him. The senior officer expressed shock at the situation, labeling the video as fabricated and fake.
"I will speak to my advocate before initiating legal action," Rao stated. He emphasized the need for a proper investigation into the matter to establish the truth.
Details of the Suspension and Past Controversies
During his suspension period, Rao will receive a subsistence allowance according to Rule 4 of the All India Service (Discipline and Appeal) Rules from 1969. The order specifically prohibits him from leaving headquarters without written permission from the state government.
This is not the first time Rao has faced controversy. In 2025, his stepdaughter Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested in a gold smuggling case. Allegations surfaced that Rao allowed Ranya to bypass security checks at the airport. These allegations led to his compulsory leave at that time.
The 1993-batch IPS officer was recalled in August and posted as DGP before this latest suspension. Police sources suggest the purported video was shot in 2017 when Rao served as Inspector General of Police for the Northern Range.
The video reportedly shows an officer in uniform engaging in inappropriate physical contact with a woman during working hours. Authorities believe the recording was made inside his office, though investigations continue to verify these details.
