The Special Detective Unit (SDU) of Kaithal police intercepted a truck near the Mohna toll plaza on National Highway 152D and arrested the driver, recovering 2.992 kilograms of opium from the vehicle. The operation, conducted early on June 25, 2026, is part of an ongoing anti-drug campaign in the region.
Details of the Operation
Acting on a tip-off, the SDU team set up a checkpoint near the Mohna toll plaza on Ambala road. Around 4 am, they stopped a truck bearing a Punjab registration number coming from the Narnaul side. The driver was identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Dhankheri village in Chatra district, Jharkhand.
DSP Sushil Prakash arrived at the scene after being informed by the patrolling team. During the search, a parcel wrapped in brown tape was discovered in a storage box beneath the co-driver's seat inside the truck cabin. Upon opening the parcel, police found opium weighing 2.992 kilograms.
Consignment and Preliminary Findings
The truck was loaded with bundles of iron wires, and transport documents and consignment records were seized. According to a police spokesperson, the consignment was being transported from Odisha to Ludhiana. The accused allegedly procured the opium in Jharkhand and planned to supply it in Punjab.
“A case under the NDPS Act was registered at Pundri police station,” the spokesperson added.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have obtained an eight-day remand of the accused from the court for further interrogation. They are working to identify other members of the drug trafficking network and ascertain the source and intended recipients of the contraband. The operation was conducted under the directions of Karnal Range IG Ashok Kumar and SP Manpreet Singh Sudan.
