Kanpur: Lover confesses, leads cops to woman's body

In a chilling revelation, Kanpur police have recovered the skeletal remains of a 45-year-old woman who had been missing for eight months. The breakthrough came after her alleged lover confessed to the murder and led authorities to a ditch on the outskirts of their village.

A Tragic Disappearance and Growing Suspicion

The victim, who lost her husband to cancer in 2021, had begun living with her husband's unmarried cousin from the neighbourhood. According to her family, she left with the accused for Etawah in April, leaving her children with her in-laws, and was never seen again.

Her son stated that in April 2025, the accused took his mother to Etawah for wheat harvesting work. After that, all contact was lost. When questioned, the accused claimed she had left Etawah alone. Upon his return, he started living in a room adjacent to a tubewell outside the village.

Suspicions finally erupted on November 29 at a wedding ceremony. When the family again asked about the woman's whereabouts, the accused coldly replied that she would not return. This alarming statement prompted the family to act.

The Investigation and Grisly Confession

The woman's children first launched their own search before officially filing a complaint with Sajeti police on December 29. Police promptly took the accused into custody.

During interrogation, he broke down and confessed to the murder. He subsequently led a police team to the site where he had buried the body. The accused narrated a horrifying motive: he no longer wanted to keep the woman with him and had asked his brother to take her in. When she refused, he strangled her to death and buried her remains in a field near the tubewell.

The woman's son has also named the brothers of the accused for their alleged involvement in the murder. However, the primary accused has insisted that he acted alone.

Body Exhumed and Further Probe

When police exhumed the body, only the skeleton remained, a grim testament to the time that had passed since the crime. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Krishnakant Yadav confirmed the recovery and outlined the next steps.

"The skeleton has been recovered and a DNA test will be conducted to confirm the identity," ACP Yadav stated. "The matter is being investigated thoroughly. The accused has been arrested."

The case remains under active investigation as police work to verify the accused's claim of acting solo and piece together the final moments of the victim's life.
