In a swift operation, the Kanpur police have arrested six individuals in connection with a daring daylight robbery where a salesman was robbed of Rs 3,90,000. The incident, which involved a deliberate collision, occurred in a busy area of the city.
The Incident: A Calculated Attack
The crime took place on December 25 in front of GRS Hospital, under the jurisdiction of the Swaroopnagar Police Station. According to the police report, the victim, Ankit Tiwari, son of Harish Narayan Tiwari from Bidhnu, was traveling on his scooter when he was targeted. Four individuals traveling in an auto-rickshaw intentionally rammed into his vehicle. Under the guise of the accident, they then forcibly took away his scooter along with a bag containing Rs 3,90,000 in cash.
Police Crack the Case Using Tech & Surveillance
Following the complaint filed by Tiwari (Case No. 133/25 under sections 281, 115(2), and 309(4) of the BNS), the police launched a detailed investigation. The case was solved under the broader campaign against crime led by the Police Commissioner. Utilizing footage from Operation Trinetra cameras and inputs from the surveillance team, the police were able to track down the accused.
As a result of the investigation, the police successfully recovered Rs 1,73,000 of the stolen cash, five mobile phones, and the victim's scooter. The vehicles used in the crime—an auto rickshaw (registration UP78LN8389) and an SUV (registration UP78HQ9106)—were seized under section 207 of the MV Act and sent to court.
The Accused and Legal Action
The six men arrested are all residents of village and town Kakwan in Kanpur Nagar. They have been identified as:
- Sameer (36), son of Mushtaq
- Shivam (25), son of Babulal
- Shivam Pal alias Ankit Pal (20), son of Ruplal Pal
- Sonu, son of Rangilal Chauhan
- Ram Yadav (33), son of Kamlesh Kumar Yadav
- Gyan Singh (30), son of Basant
DCP Central Shrawan Kumar stated that additional charges under sections 61(2) and 317(2) of the BNS have been added to the original case at the Swaroopnagar Police Station. The police action highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts and technological tools in solving street crimes and ensuring swift justice.
