A tragic incident unfolded in a Pune lodge on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of a young man and critical injuries to his wife. The couple, hailing from Kerala, were staying at a lodge on the busy Bund Garden Road when the event occurred.
Details of the Tragic Incident
A 28-year-old man was discovered hanging from a pipe in the bathroom of the lodge room. Simultaneously, his 27-year-old wife was found with severe self-inflicted injuries inside the same room. Senior Inspector Vijayraj Doke of the Koregaon Park police station provided details of the case to the media.
The investigation revealed that the deceased was a resident of Qatar and a native of Kerala. He had travelled to Pune specifically to meet his wife, who works as a nurse at a private hospital located on Bund Garden Road. The couple had been engaged in a heated argument in their room prior to the tragedy.
Sequence of Events and Rescue Attempt
According to the statement given by the injured nurse to the police, the argument escalated to a point where her husband threatened to end his own life. He subsequently locked himself in the bathroom. After a few minutes of silence, the worried wife forced open the door only to find him hanging.
She immediately raised an alarm, alerting the staff of the lodge. The staff members rushed to the room and confirmed the grim situation. While they were preoccupied with contacting the police and emergency services, the distraught nurse attempted to take her own life using a sharp object.
Quick action by the lodge staff prevented a second fatality. They managed to intervene and save the woman. She was promptly rushed to the hospital where she is employed and is currently receiving medical treatment. Her condition is reported to be stable under observation.
Police Investigation Underway
The Koregaon Park police have initiated a process to record an accidental death report (ADR) in connection with the man's death. Inspector Doke stated that further inquiries are ongoing to understand the complete context and the cause of the marital dispute that led to such an extreme step. The police are also recording statements from witnesses, including the lodge staff who were first on the scene.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community on Bund Garden Road, highlighting the severe consequences of unresolved personal conflicts. The police have urged couples and families facing distress to seek help from counselling services rather than resorting to drastic measures.
