Kochi: Rural police conducted extensive raids in Perumbavoor on Sunday as part of Operation Toofan, resulting in the seizure of 60 vials of heroin and the arrest of 12 individuals. The raids were led by a team under Perumbavoor ASP Hardik Meena.
Raids Across Perumbavoor
Police carried out inspections near the Perumbavoor bus stand, fish market, and other areas of the town. A sniffer dog trained to detect narcotic substances assisted in the operation. The raids began on Sunday evening and continued late into the night.
Major Drug Seizures Since June 1
According to rural police, approximately 60 kg of cannabis has been seized since June 1. Additionally, 780 g of hashish oil and 5 g of MDMA were confiscated. Around 60 drug-related cases have been registered, and 73 people have been arrested during this period. Police stated that special teams are investigating each seizure to identify the entire racket, including the original source and destination of the smuggled contraband.
Intensified Enforcement
The investigation is ongoing as ground-level enforcement is being intensified in regions like Perumbavoor under the leadership of district police chief K S Sudarshan. The largest cannabis haul under Operation Toofan was 34 kg, seized from Kunnuvazhi. The accused had brought the drugs from Odisha and were caught while traveling in an autorickshaw from Aluva railway station. Three people from West Bengal were arrested in connection with this case. Police later seized 12 kg of cannabis brought from Odisha at Angamaly railway station, leading to the arrest of two more West Bengal natives.
Additional Seizures and Arrests
During a raid in Perumbavoor town, cannabis, hashish oil, and heroin were recovered. Four sacks of banned tobacco products were also seized in the operation. Two women migrants were arrested in connection with drug sales.
