Kolkata Protests Reignite Demand for Justice in RG Kar Junior Doctor Case
Justice for the RG Kar Medical College junior doctor who was raped and murdered echoed through the streets of Kolkata once again on Monday. The victim, a postgraduate trainee in chest medicine, would have celebrated her 33rd birthday on this day. The tragic incident occurred while she was on duty, with her body discovered inside the seminar room of the chest medicine department on August 9, 2024.
Protests Mark 18-Month Anniversary and Birthday
Eighteen months after the horrific crime, various organizations took to the streets, protesting for justice for the deceased junior doctor. The demonstrations coincided with what would have been her 33rd birth anniversary, adding a poignant layer to the calls for accountability.
"My daughter was raped and murdered in her workplace. We did not get justice till date. We were told that Sanjay Roy was arrested and convicted. But we are convinced that Sanjay Roy alone did not commit the crime, and there are other people involved in it," said the slain junior doctor's mother during a protest at Dorina crossing. This event was organized by the West Bengal Junior Doctor's Front (WBJDF).
Widespread Demonstrations Across the City
The WBJDF's protest saw participation from Abhaya Mancha, another prominent organization. Later in the evening, these two groups conducted a torch rally, marching from the slain doctor's house in Sodepur to Tilottama Mor, symbolizing their unwavering demand for justice.
In a separate but coordinated effort, the RG Kar Resident Doctors' Association, alongside the students' body of the medical college, organized a candlelight march. Participants walked from the college campus to Shyambazar 5-point crossing, honoring their deceased colleague and demanding swift action. They offered floral tributes at the ‘Cry of the Hour' statue, pledging to continue their advocacy until justice is fully served.
Commitment to Ongoing Advocacy
"While the incident and the series of protests following it restored a democratic atmosphere on our campus, our slain colleague is yet to get justice, and we will keep raising our voice time and again till we are convinced that justice is delivered," stated a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College. This sentiment underscores the persistent efforts of the medical community and activists to ensure the case receives the attention it deserves.
The protests highlight ongoing concerns about workplace safety and judicial delays, with participants vowing to maintain pressure on authorities until all perpetrators are held accountable and justice is achieved for the victim and her family.
