Thiruvananthapuram: A tragic road accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Neyyattinkara, claiming the life of a 26-year-old man and leaving seven others injured. The incident took place when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus lost control and collided with a car.
Victim identified
The deceased has been identified as Arun Krishnan, a resident of Chaykottukonam, who was driving the car. The accident happened around 8 am on the Thiruvananthapuram-Neyyattinkara route. The bus, traveling in one direction, rammed head-on into Krishnan's car coming from the opposite side.
Rescue operation
After the initial impact, the bus veered off the road and crashed into a nearby bus stop before finally coming to a halt. The car was completely mangled in the collision, trapping Krishnan inside. Personnel from the Neyyattinkara fire and rescue services, along with the police, rushed to the spot and extricated him from the wreckage. He was immediately taken to the Neyyattinkara general hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Injured passengers
Seven passengers traveling on the bus sustained injuries and were admitted to various government and private hospitals in the area. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Traffic disruption
The accident and the subsequent rescue operation led to heavy traffic congestion on the busy stretch for nearly two hours. Vehicles were stuck in long queues as authorities worked to clear the scene.
Preliminary investigation
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus was traveling at high speed and that the driver may have dozed off at the wheel, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Police said further inquiries are under way to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
