A devastating fire at a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow's Aliganj area on Monday afternoon claimed at least 15 lives, including those of an engaged couple whose wedding preparations were tragically cut short. The blaze erupted in a structure housing an animation centre, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Couple's Dreams Shattered
Among the victims were a young couple who were set to marry next month. Relatives confirmed that the pair had been finalizing wedding arrangements and were visiting the building for unrelated errands when the fire broke out. Their families, who had been joyfully preparing for the nuptials, are now mourning their loss. "They were so excited about their future together. Now we are planning their funerals instead," a family member told PTI.
Fire and Rescue Operations
The fire started around 2:30 PM on the second floor of the building, which also housed a small animation studio and several offices. Firefighters from multiple stations rushed to the scene and battled the blaze for over three hours. Rescue teams used ladders and ropes to evacuate trapped individuals, but thick smoke and intense heat hampered efforts. At least 15 bodies were recovered, with several others injured and hospitalized.
Investigation Underway
Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit may have sparked the fire, though officials have not ruled out other causes. Lucknow District Magistrate confirmed that a forensic team has been deployed to examine the site. "We are collecting evidence and will take strict action against those responsible for any safety lapses," he stated.
Community in Mourning
The tragedy has left the Aliganj neighborhood in grief. Local residents gathered at the site, many in tears, as they recalled the victims. The engaged couple, identified as Ravi and Priya (names changed), were well-known in the area. "They were a lovely pair. We cannot believe they are gone," a neighbor said. Authorities have announced compensation for the families of the deceased.
