Labourer Held for Alleged Assault on Minor in Navi Mumbai
The NRI coastal police in Navi Mumbai have taken into custody a 34-year-old man for the alleged sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl. The disturbing incident took place in Karave village on the night of December 24.
Details of the December 24 Incident
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Pravat Kumar Paik, entered the girl's residence around 9:30 PM. The child was alone at home, watching television, when Paik, who works as a daily wage labourer, allegedly assaulted her.
The minor girl raised an alarm during the assault. Hearing her cries, neighbours rushed to the house and managed to apprehend the accused. They held him until the girl's parents, who are also labourers, arrived at the scene after being informed about the traumatic event. Residents of the building reportedly thrashed the accused before handing him over to the police.
Legal Action and Charges Filed
An FIR has been registered against Pravat Kumar Paik under stringent legal provisions. The charges include sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty. Furthermore, the case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for the offences of Aggravated Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment of a Child.
The accused was formally arrested and presented before the Belapur court. The court remanded him in police custody for one day, until Friday, after which he was sent to judicial custody.
