Police in Delhi have arrested a 40-year-old man for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of another man, a crime motivated by an attempt to recover an outstanding loan. The dramatic incident, which culminated in a rescue operation in Maharashtra, unfolded in the bustling Azadpur Mandi area of northwest Delhi.
The Kidnapping and the Initial Police Alert
The chain of events began on December 27 when the Adarsh Nagar police station received a PCR call. A vigilant passerby reported witnessing a kidnapping incident, prompting immediate police action. Officers swiftly moved to analyse CCTV footage from the vicinity to piece together the crime.
Two days later, the police formally registered a case when a friend of Guddu Saroj, a resident of Adarsh Nagar, came forward. The friend reported that Saroj had been kidnapped at around 7:30 pm on December 27 from the same spot. He further informed the authorities that a man named Rajaram from Jalna district in Maharashtra was demanding money for Saroj's release.
CCTV Clues and the Interstate Trail
The CCTV analysis proved crucial. Additional CP (northwest) Bhisham Singh stated that the footage clearly showed Saroj being forced into a car. The vehicle, bearing a Maharashtra number plate, was traced and found to be registered under the name of Ramdas Harishchandra Harer.
Utilising technical surveillance, police teams tracked Saroj's location to a remote farm area in Panewadi, Jalna. In the early hours of last Thursday, a coordinated operation led to Saroj being successfully rescued from this isolated location.
Arrest and Confession
During the rescue operation, the police apprehended one of the alleged kidnappers, identified as Gyaneshwar Chavhan. Upon interrogation, Chavhan confessed to his involvement in the crime. He revealed that he had carried out the kidnapping along with two associates: his brother Rajaram and another man named Somnath Udadange.
According to the police, Udadange was responsible for arranging the vehicle used in the kidnapping. The car was registered under the name of Udadange's father-in-law. While Chavhan is now in custody, his two alleged accomplices, Rajaram and Somnath Udadange, are currently absconding, and a search is underway to locate them.
The investigation has established that the primary motive behind the abduction was to extort ransom to settle a loan that the victim, Guddu Saroj, reportedly owed to the accused.
