Mangaluru City police launched surprise operations on Friday to tackle drug abuse among students. This initiative forms part of the broader drug-free Mangaluru campaign. Police teams specifically targeted students traveling in college buses across various city areas.
Focus on Students from Kerala
The drive primarily involved students from Kerala who are studying in different colleges within Mangaluru. City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy explained the operation's details. Police stopped college and private buses to conduct on-the-spot drug screening tests on students.
Supervision and Execution
Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP) for CEN and South divisions supervised the entire drive. Commissioner Reddy expressed satisfaction with the outcomes. He stated that the results are highly encouraging and demonstrate clear improvement compared to previous observations. However, he acknowledged there is still scope for further improvement.
Detailed Test Results
In the Konaje police limits, officers stopped two buses belonging to a private college. They tested 87 students from these buses. All test results came back negative, which police described as a positive development.
Within Ullal police limits, police randomly selected students from both private and college buses. Students from five different colleges underwent testing here. Police completed 103 tests on this stretch, with 101 returning negative results.
Commissioner Reddy provided additional numbers. With an extra 10 tests conducted, the total reached 200 students tested during the operation.
One Evasion Attempt
The commissioner reported one incident where a student attempted to evade the testing process. Police are initiating necessary action against this student as per standard procedure.
Future Plans and Collective Efforts
Commissioner Reddy emphasized that such surprise checks will continue regularly. He described them as a deterrent against drug abuse. The encouraging results indicate that sustained efforts by multiple stakeholders are yielding positive outcomes.
Police, district administration, educational institutions, and civil society are all contributing to these collective efforts. The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment to continue working toward a drug-free Mangaluru and drug-free educational campuses.
