Mapusa Police Struggle to Identify Migrant Worker Killed in Violent Altercation

In a tragic incident in Mapusa, Goa, the police are still grappling with the identity of a migrant worker who was killed by another worker approximately a week ago. The victim, locally known as Ravi, was found deceased in the Bodgini area of Mapusa, with a missing ear, adding a gruesome detail to the case.

Police Campaign to Document Floating Population

In response to the incident, Mapusa police have initiated a proactive campaign aimed at documenting the floating migrant population within the town. Police Inspector Naveen Desai stated, "We are running a campaign to document the floating migrant population in the town. Since the last four days, we have registered 83 homeless individuals, and their names and details were meticulously recorded." This effort underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in managing transient communities and ensuring their safety.

Arrest Made in Connection with the Murder

The police have made significant progress in the investigation by arresting Sawangkhoba Chaoba Singh, a 43-year-old native of Assam. According to PI Desai, the altercation occurred on March 27 when a fight erupted between Singh and the victim, Ravi, while they were drinking. Singh allegedly killed Ravi in a fit of rage, leading to his arrest. The motive appears to be rooted in a sudden outburst during the drunken confrontation, highlighting the dangers associated with alcohol-fueled disputes among migrant workers.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

The case has brought attention to the broader issues faced by migrant populations in Goa, including homelessness and lack of documentation. The police's registration drive, which has so far documented 83 homeless individuals, is a step toward addressing these vulnerabilities. However, the inability to fully identify the victim, Ravi, complicates the investigation and underscores the need for more robust systems to track and protect migrant workers. Authorities continue to appeal for any information that might help confirm Ravi's identity and provide closure to his family.
