Migrant Worker from Jharkhand Attacked in Mangaluru Over False Bangladeshi Accusation

A migrant labourer from Jharkhand faced a violent attack in Mangaluru on Sunday. Four local men assaulted him after wrongly accusing him of being a Bangladeshi national.

Victim's Long History in the City

The victim, Diljan Ansar, has been working seasonally in Mangaluru for the past ten to fifteen years. He typically spends four to six months each year in the city for work.

On Sunday evening, Ansar went out to buy chicken when two men approached him. They questioned him about his village and immediately accused him of being from Bangladesh.

Escalation of the Confrontation

The assailants demanded that Ansar show his identity documents. They made derogatory remarks during the confrontation. When Ansar insisted he was not Bangladeshi, the situation turned violent.

Four men joined the attack, reportedly using a trowel that belonged to the victim. They caused a head injury that resulted in heavy bleeding.

Religious Dimension to the Assault

Ansar revealed a disturbing aspect of the attack during his television interview. The men inquired about his religion. When he identified himself as Muslim, they allegedly forced him to chant "Jai Shri Ram" three times before assaulting him.

His mobile phone was damaged during the incident. A woman intervened to help him, showing courage amid the violence.

Police Response and Investigation

City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH confirmed the details of the attack. Initially, Ansar did not file a complaint due to fear of retaliation. He returned home after the assault.

Local leaders later brought the matter to police attention. Authorities verified the facts and instructed officers to arrest the accused immediately.

Suspects Identified

Police have identified four suspects in the case:

  • Sagar
  • Danush
  • Lalu alias Rathish
  • Mohan

All four are residents of Kulur in Mangaluru. Police are currently verifying their backgrounds as part of the investigation.

Legal Action Taken

The Kavoor police station has registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include sections 126(2), 109, 352, 351(3), 353, and 118(1) read with 3(5).

This incident highlights the vulnerability of migrant workers in urban areas. It also raises concerns about identity-based violence and religious intolerance in public spaces.
