The skeletal remains of a 75-year-old man, missing for over three weeks, were discovered in a dilapidated building in Rudrapur on Friday night, sending shockwaves through the Udham Singh Nagar district headquarters and prompting a detailed police investigation.
Discovery by Sanitation Worker Leads to Grisly Find
The case, which had gone cold, was dramatically reopened when a sanitation worker, collecting firewood near Kashipur Road to keep warm, noticed a foul smell emanating from an abandoned structure. Upon venturing inside, he made the grim discovery of human skeletal remains and immediately alerted others in the vicinity.
Police swiftly cordoned off the area and conducted a preliminary inspection. The remains were subsequently sent for a crucial post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Family's Agony and Identification
The deceased was identified as Jai Singh, a resident of Preet Vihar who worked as a gardener. He lived with his daughter, Vimla, and son-in-law, Ramesh Kumar. According to Vimla, Jai Singh had left home early on the morning of November 27 without informing anyone and never returned.
A missing person complaint was lodged with the police the same day. Despite repeated searches conducted by both police personnel and anxious relatives, no concrete leads were found until Friday night's chilling discovery. Family members later identified the remains based on the clothing and personal belongings found at the scene.
Police Probe All Angles, Await Post-Mortem Report
City police circle officer Prashant Kumar stated that investigators are examining all possible angles in the case, including the possibility of murder. The abandoned building on Kashipur Road is now a primary focus of the forensic and investigative teams.
"The post-mortem report will help establish the cause of death, after which further action will be taken," Kumar said, emphasizing that the findings are essential for directing the course of the probe. The police are treating the discovery with utmost seriousness, exploring every scenario that could explain the elderly man's disappearance and death.
